JACKSONVILLE, FLORIDA — Human remains discovered on October 3 have been identified as those of a 30-year-old man who was reported missing in September, according to the Jacksonville Police Department. The identification brings an important development in the missing-person case, although questions surrounding the man’s death and the circumstances that led to the discovery remain. Police have not provided further details in the information currently available about what happened before the remains were found. The discovery has drawn attention to the investigation as authorities work to establish the circumstances surrounding the man’s disappearance and death. Remains Discovered Near U.S. Highway 17 According to local news reports, the remains were discovered around 8:52 a.m. on October 3 in a wooded area near the intersection of Yopp Road and U.S. Highway 17 in Jacksonville, North Carolina. A person mowing grass reportedly came across what appeared to be a human skeleton and alerted authorities. Police officers responded to the location and confirmed the discovery of human skeletal remains. The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation assisted with processing the scene as investigators began working to identify the individual. At the time of the initial discovery, officials said they had a possible identification but were waiting for confirmation from the State Medical Examiner’s Office before releasing the person’s name. Identified as Tyler Ragon In an update published on October 9, police identified the remains as those of Tyler Ragon, 30, who had been reported missing to the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on September 9. Investigators said Ragon was last known to be alive on August 4, meaning several weeks had passed between the last known sighting and the discovery of his remains. Authorities have not publicly explained what happened during that period. The identification represents a significant development for investigators and provides an answer about the identity of the missing man. However, it does not resolve the questions surrounding his death. Investigation Into His Death Continues The Jacksonville Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding Ragon’s death. Authorities have not publicly established the cause or manner of death, and the available reports do not confirm whether foul play was involved. Investigators are asking anyone who may have information about Ragon’s whereabouts or the events leading up to his disappearance to contact Detective R. Feller with the Jacksonville Police Department at 910-938-6410 or by email at rfeller@jacksonvillenc.gov. As the investigation moves forward, authorities may release additional information when it becomes available and when doing so will not interfere with their work. The case is a painful reminder of the uncertainty families can experience when a loved one goes missing. While identifying the remains answers one important question, many details remain unknown.
