Ontario, Oregon, is mourning the death of 22-year-old Keith Roderick, who died Thursday evening, October 8, 2026, after being struck by two vehicles while crossing a marked pedestrian crosswalk.

According to a report published by Elkhorn Media Group, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 8:44 p.m. to the intersection of Southwest 4th Avenue and Southwest 12th Street, near a Chevron station, following reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian.

Preliminary findings indicate that Roderick, an Ontario resident, was crossing Southwest 4th Avenue within the marked crosswalk when he entered the westbound lanes of traffic. He was struck by a vehicle driven by a 68-year-old man, also from Ontario.

Following the initial collision, Roderick was struck by a second vehicle traveling in a nearby lane. That vehicle was driven by a 73-year-old Ontario resident, authorities said.

Emergency Crews Attempted to Save Him

First responders immediately began lifesaving measures at the scene in an effort to help the young pedestrian. Roderick was subsequently transported to Saint Alphonsus Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Despite the efforts of emergency personnel, he did not survive his injuries. The sudden loss of someone so young has brought renewed attention to the dangers pedestrians can face when navigating busy intersections, particularly after dark.

Authorities have not released additional details about the drivers or whether any citations or charges may follow. No conclusions about responsibility should be drawn while the investigation remains active.

Investigation Continues

The Ontario Police Department, Oregon State Police, and Malheur County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the fatal collision. Officials have said that additional information is being withheld while investigators work to establish the full circumstances of the crash. Any further updates are expected to come through the district attorney’s office.

The investigation will be important in determining how the two collisions occurred and whether any contributing factors played a role. For now, the publicly released information remains preliminary.

A Tragic Reminder About Pedestrian Safety

Roderick’s death is a painful reminder of the vulnerability of pedestrians, even when they are using designated crosswalks. Drivers are urged to remain alert, watch for people crossing the road, and exercise particular caution at intersections and during nighttime hours.

For the Ontario community, the incident marks a tragic loss of a young resident whose life ended unexpectedly. As authorities continue their work, the focus remains on understanding what happened and providing accurate information to the public.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Keith Roderick’s family, friends, and everyone affected by his death. May his loved ones find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
