OTTAWA, ONTARIO — Father Joe LeClair, a longtime Catholic priest known for his engaging sermons and prominent role in Ottawa’s religious community, has died at the age of 74.

LeClair died peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday evening, October 8, 2026, according to reports published the following day. His death was confirmed by clergy associated with St. Leonard Parish in Manotick, where he had continued assisting with Masses and pastoral care in recent years.

His passing marks the end of a long and eventful chapter in Ottawa’s Catholic community. Over several decades, LeClair became a familiar figure to parishioners, particularly through his ministry at Blessed Sacrament Church in the city’s Glebe neighbourhood.

Remembered for His Preaching and Connection With Parishioners

Father Joe, as many people knew him, developed a reputation for energetic preaching and an ability to connect with people during services. During his time at Blessed Sacrament, the parish became known for drawing large congregations, with worshippers from different generations attending his Masses.

A profile published in 2010 described him as a priest whose approach encouraged people to participate in parish life. His ministry included preaching, religious instruction and pastoral support for people seeking guidance during important moments in their lives.

After leaving Blessed Sacrament, LeClair continued his religious work elsewhere, including a period serving in Moncton, New Brunswick. He later returned to the Ottawa region and assisted at St. Leonard Parish, remaining involved in church activities after retirement.

A Complicated Chapter in His Public Life

LeClair’s legacy also includes a criminal case that brought significant attention to his ministry. In January 2014, he pleaded guilty to fraud and theft involving approximately $130,000 taken from Blessed Sacrament Church over several years. The court heard that the financial misconduct was connected in part to a gambling addiction.

In March 2014, he was sentenced to one year in jail followed by one year of probation. The case deeply disappointed some parishioners, while others continued to express support for him and remember the personal connections they had developed during his years as their priest.

The conviction remains an important part of his public history. His story reflects a complicated legacy in which his influence on parish life and his serious breach of trust both remain part of the record.

Following his release from prison, LeClair resumed religious service, eventually returning to the Ottawa area. His later work included celebrating Mass, hearing confessions and providing pastoral care to parishioners.

Funeral Arrangements Awaited

As of October 9, 2026, public reports had not announced funeral or memorial arrangements. Further information may be shared through the Archdiocese of Ottawa-Cornwall or St. Leonard Parish in Manotick.

His death is expected to prompt reflection among people who encountered him throughout his years in ministry. For former parishioners, fellow clergy and members of the wider community, memories of his sermons and pastoral presence will form part of how they remember his life.

Father Joe LeClair’s story was marked by religious service, public controversy and a return to ministry. As the Ottawa Catholic community learns of his passing, his life and legacy are likely to be remembered in different ways by those who knew him.

May his family, friends and all those grieving his death find comfort during this difficult time.
