HOUSTON, TEXAS — A Houston family is mourning an extraordinary series of losses after 61-year-old Louis Riley Jr. was killed in a shooting in the city, followed hours later by a fatal vehicle crash that claimed the lives of his aunt and her husband as they traveled to Houston to support grieving relatives.

According to the information released by authorities and shared by the family, Riley was shot Thursday afternoon in the 300 block of East 44th Street. His aunt, Gloria Sanders, 70, and her husband, Wallace Perry, 70, later died in a two-vehicle collision in Washington County while traveling from the area to be with family following news of Riley’s death.

The tragic sequence has left relatives grieving three family members in a single day.

Houston Police Respond to Fatal Shooting

Houston Police Department North Patrol officers responded to the shooting at approximately 2:30 p.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, they found Riley suffering from at least one gunshot wound.

Officers reportedly provided first aid while waiting for Houston Fire Department personnel to arrive. Riley was then transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators believe an altercation led to an exchange of gunfire while Riley was sitting in a shaded gathering area at an apartment complex. Authorities are reportedly receiving conflicting accounts of what happened, and a suspect description had not been confirmed in the information provided.

The investigation remains important to establishing the circumstances that led to Riley’s death. Anyone with information about the shooting may be able to assist detectives as they work to determine how the confrontation began and identify those responsible.

Fatal Crash Claims Lives of Riley’s Relatives

Later Thursday, at approximately 5:28 p.m., Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a serious two-vehicle collision on State Highway 105, west of the Brazos River in Washington County.

According to the supplied account of the DPS investigation, an eastbound Chevrolet Equinox attempted to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone. During the maneuver, the Equinox collided head-on with a westbound Chevrolet Impala.

The Impala’s driver, Wallace Perry, 70, and passenger Gloria Sanders, 70, both residents of Washington, Texas, were pronounced dead at the scene. Their family later identified Sanders as Riley’s aunt and Perry as her husband.

An 18-year-old female passenger from Cypress who was traveling in the Equinox’s back seat also died at the scene. The Equinox’s driver and two other passengers were reportedly airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital–Downtown with suspected serious injuries.

The crash remains a separate tragedy from the Houston shooting, but the family connection has brought the two incidents together in an especially painful way.

A Family Facing Unimaginable Grief

The deaths of Riley, Sanders and Perry in the space of several hours have placed an enormous emotional burden on their surviving relatives. Sanders and Perry were reportedly traveling to Houston after learning of Riley’s death, hoping to be with family during a difficult moment.

Instead, their journey ended in another fatal emergency.

As the shooting and crash investigations continue, relatives are left to mourn three loved ones while awaiting answers about the circumstances surrounding their deaths.

The family is asking for prayers and support during this devastating time. May those who died rest in peace, and may their loved ones find strength and comfort in the days ahead.
